Best things to do in Leicestershire with Kids
Visit a Country Park
Leicestershire has over 20 beautiful country parks, whether you are looking to stretch little legs, have a picnic, go a quick paddle, take a boat ride, find a playground or have a good trudge you are not short of choice. There is a comprehensive list of parks on the Leicestershire County Council website. Our personal favourites are Bradgate Park, Abbey Park, Sence Valley Forest Park and Jubilee Wood.
Go for a bike ride
There are some great options for family bike rides in the county. We tend to visit Hicks Lodge as it is on our doorstep, there are several routes aimed at different abilities. You can finish off your cycle with visit to the playground and a coffee and lite bite at the Grounds Cafe. Parking is £3 all day. Other great cycle rides include to Conkers Circuit, Ashby Woulds Trail and Sence Valley Forest Park.
Get up close and personal with some of Leicestershires animal residents at the many animal based attractions. Of course a trip to Leicestershire wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Twycross Zoo. There are some other wonderful options as well, learn about exotic birds at Tropical Birdland, make friends with an alpaca at Charnoond Alpacas, unlock the inner farmer at Manor Park Farm, Gorse Hill City Farm and Stonehurst Family Farm.
Ride on a Steam Engine
There are actually two heritage railways in Leicestershire. Great Central Railway runs from Loughborough to Leicester (return) and is the UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other, just as it was when steam ruled the rails. Be sure to check the GCR website for special events throughout the year such as the popular Santa Special. Battlefield Line runs from Shackerstone to Shenton (return) this is a shorter line but offers just as much fun. Check out their website for details, events and timetables.
Step back to time
Leicesterhire has some exciting stories to tell and none more famous than that of King Richard III and the Battle of Bosworth. A trip to the King Richard III Visitors Centre (Leicester) and the Bosworth Battlefield & Heritage Centre (Market Bosworth) is a must if visiting the county. We also highly recommend a visit to the 1620s House and Gardens in Donington Le Heath this beautifully restored 17th century house has links to the imfamous Gunpowder Plot.
Located in North West Leicestershire near the village of Heather is Cattows Farm. A wonderful pick your own farm that is open year round for seasonal pickings such as fruit, sunflower and pumpkins. There is a childrens playground, friendly sheep, bouncy castles and go karts (the latter two are run by an external company). Treat yourself to afternoon tea in the cafe (currently takeaway only) or some beautiful fresh produce in the farm shop. Cattows regularly hosts events such as the annual Ashby Show and Guy Fawkes celebrations.
National Space Centre
One of our favourite family days out is the National Space Centre located in the city of Leicester. The centre gives a fascinating insight into the history of space travel, space technology, our Solar System and much more. Check the website for opening times and entry prices. Parking is £3 all day.
Bosworth Water Park
A great day for the whole family. Bosworth Water Park really has family fun in the bag! Paddle in the Blue Lagoon, play in the fantastic playground, have a go on the pedalos and play a round of crazy golf. There is a cafe and bar onsite for meals, snacks and the all important icecream. Picnics are welcome.
Twinlakes Family Theme Park
Leicestershire has its very own theme park. Twinlakes has so much to offer I couldn’t possibly tell you it all. Located just outside Melton Mowbray, Twinlakes is jammed packed full of rides, activites, seasonal events and much more. Check the website for opening times and entry prices.
This award winning attraction offers a unique mix of indoor and outdoor experiences that will keep your family engaged for hours! Conkers is a wonderful back to nature day out with a range of outdoor adventures, water play, several fantastic playgrounds, fairy maze, lookout tower, Conkerchoo train (the site has two main areas connected by the train) and much more! The discovery centre offers lots of indoor activites and exhibits and there is even a 4D cinema and soft play centre. Grab a bite at the onsite cafes and snack shops. Parking is free.
